President’s Blog—Summer 2010

August 10, 2010

From 2010/2011 President:  Dominic Siciliano

Well, summer seems to be flying by once again. I can’t believe we’re already talking about the golf outing in just a few weeks!   The golf outing always seems to be a great highlight of the summer.  It is a very fun event, a chance to see all our friends and colleagues in the industry.  It’s a kind of unique and special thing to be able to come together with, in many ways our competition, to enjoy that day.

And boy, do we need a day to let our hair down.  If you’re like me, I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of unrest this summer.  As wonderful as the weather’s been, we’ve had a different kind of cloud hanging over all our heads since March 23.  Whether you’re on the carrier side or the agent side—the news just has not been that great.  From commission cuts, to carriers leaving the market, to rate increases, to the federal reforms that very truly threaten our futures, it has been a rough summer.

As we enter this year of WMAHU activity, the board is really trying to balance that understanding that times are tough with the clear need to ramp up activity to support and grow our membership.  We are taking the stance that now, more than ever, members need us and we need them.  We’re just a little association here, 150 members and growing, but there is no reason we can’t be bigger and there is certainly no reason to believe we can’t make a difference.

Right now, as we speak, (or read), our NAHU folks in Washington are working to ensure your commissions are protected.  The NAIC's summer meeting is August 12-17 and Janet Trautwein expects that NAIC may vote on/make a recommendation during that time that agent commissions be considered a ‘pass through’ and not calculated into the minimum loss ratios for administration under PPACA.  NAHU also has representatives appointed to two statutory work groups with the NAIC where we actually have equal votes with the commissioners. One is the Consumer Information Subgroup which is working on language for the uniform summary of benefits and explanations of benefits.

Concerned about the exchanges?  NAIC is beginning work on model language around exchanges.  Did you know that there is a clause in PPACA that there's a state-level waiver process that can address whether or not states allow subsidies outside as well as inside the exchange?  NAHU and MAHU will continue to flush items like these out and continue to find places where most of us in this industry can grow and flourish.  The bill is passed, the thing is law, but the hard work must continue.

I’m hoping all this does help you feel a bit better about the future.  After all, that is why you pay your dues.  And, it is my duty and my job to report that at the National Conference, the House of Delegates did vote to raise national dues $75 effective January 1, 2011.  We in WMAHU were disappointed by this but resigned to the fact that it is necessary and we can sell it because we did learn how much is being done on our behalf.  Still, it isn’t great, it won’t be an easy sell so we are calling on all of our members this year to help us out.

Below, you will find a schedule for late summer into late fall of our programming.  Note that our first general membership meeting will not be our traditional breakfast but an afternoon meeting/member appreciation happy hour.  We will be introducing our board, sharing our plans for programming that we think will drive membership and retention, and asking for your feedback and support to help recruit new members.  Steve Selinsky, our National President and Pat Pennefather, our MAHU Legislative Chair, will be stopping by to join the discussion.  We’ll then enjoy some appetizers and beverages in honor of you—the folks who have stuck by year and year out, who support the association and its efforts and who deserve a ‘thank you’ for doing that.

As you can see below, we are changing the way we do business to make it tougher for non-members to enjoy our programming.  We have committed to bringing more speaker series programs to West Michigan with very good speakers that members only will have access to.  Expo will not be free for non-members and the meetings we do open up to non-members will cost them more to attend.  We feel the time has come for us to draw that line in the sand—“IF NOT NOW, WHEN?”  We will not be punitive in our attitudes in our efforts but we will firmly communicate that we would like our non-members to join.  We need their bodies, we need their numbers, we need their money in Washington to continue the effort of fighting for our industry.

Just one final note—I mentioned the NAHU National Conference.  WMAHU was able to send several people to the conference this year because it was in Chicago.  Many of us were ‘first timers.’  I can easily say that if you have never been, please, approach me at one of our events.  I want you to find a way to get you there.  It was a really cool three days and time well spent.  You really get a chance to see the strength and the unity that comes from a group of professionals who truly are working to keep their industry together and viable--that Health Underwriters is much more than monthly meetings, an annual golf outing and an Expo.  I think any one of us who has never gone would walk away feeling stronger about the association and more enriched professionally for having attended.

Still on that note, it is certainly not my intention to pass over the dues increase.  It is a real and viable threat to growing and retaining members.  Still, with the concrete examples of the work we are doing in Washington, we can show members and new members that there is value associated.

Thanks so much for all your support and we’ll see you around and under the trains planes and automobiles in a few weeks!

President’s Blog—Spring/Summer 2010

June 17, 2010
From 2010/2011 President:  Dominic Siciliano

WELCOME
As we wrap up our board year at WMAHU, all of us wish to thank all of you, our general membership for your continued support.  We had a very successful year as an association (despite it all!).  I am very impressed with our members, the fellowship and professionalism we show at our events and meetings, our commitment to our profession, and our fortitude in the face of adversity.  Fourteen of our members have contributed to HUPAC this year and we continue to remain viable with141 active members.

JUNE 9TH JANET TRAUTWEIN COMMUNITY EDUCATION EVENT

Thank you to our committee led by David Cluley and including Eve Rogus, Denise Hodges, Sue Mason, and Pat Siciliano for pulling this very impressive event together.  Also, thank you to all our sponsors.  I think all of us were proud that day to members of the association.  It was neat to be able bring an educational opportunity not only to our members but also to our community and clients.  This was our first run at this type of event and we want to know your thoughts.  Please send comments to me or to any member of the committee.  Also, let us know if you’d like to participate on this committee going forward.

BOARD ELECTIONS—Comings and Goings
Please be on the lookout for an email ballot soon to both re-elect your board and vote on the new nominees for the Board for 2010/2011.  Also, let me know if you would like to nominate one of your colleagues or be on the board yourself!  We are looking for insurance agents.  We have a nice mix right now on the Board of carrier reps and agents but we believe a strong board has more agents than reps.

We will have four seats open in 2010/2011.

Nominees to date are:

Denise Hodges, Agent, Buchanan Agency
Gina TenHoopen, Agent, Benefits Resource Group
Kelly Knecht, Marketing, Priority Health
Rob Polick, Agent, Huntington Bank

Some key transitions to note:

Kevin Cumings will be leaving the Board after five years of service.  Kevin has been a passionate supporter and actively involved.  Kevin was President in 2008/2009 and he did a great job.  Kevin did a lot to urge our Board to ‘take it to the next level’ in our programs, our commitment and our professionalism.  He was responsible for recruiting many of the new faces you might see on the Board who have breathed new life and new ideas into his vision.  I think he’s proud of what we’ve accomplished and he is ready to recommit his time to other volunteer activities and important things like his job and his family.  Thanks for your service Kevin!

Lenny Brucato has stepped down as Programs Chair.  This was a bit unforeseen and Lenny did this with remorse but he is taking a Senior Management position in Detroit with Priority Health.  He is moving his family and his life over to the “East Side.”   It is an awesome opportunity, one in which we think he will do extremely well.  Although we are happy for Lenny, we are very sad for us.  He did a great job with Programs in his two years in the position and was a hardworking member of our Expo committee as well.  Good luck Len!

Board Members For Re-Election:
Dominic Siciliano, Carman Baines, Krista Davis, Ryan Pylman, Ron Erway, Troy Duimstra, Theresa Thurkettle, Amy Kelly, Doug Kuiper, Jessica Scudder

ALLIANCE FOR HEALTH OPPORTUNITY
Part of our focus on the Board this past year and going forward is to bring WMAHU as a source of knowledge not only to our members and the Health Insurance Industry locally but to the community at large as well.  This ideal will be first enacted with our Janet Trautwein community event on June 9th (see our website and below for more details).  On this note, Alliance for Health has approached WMAHU with an offering for us to have a seat at their table.  We accepted excitedly.  Alliance for Health has representation from many of the major players in our health system in West Michigan and many strong business leaders as well.  This will be a great way for WMAHU to have a voice in the greater health conversation and to network and interact, get in tuned with community events where we can be more present.  The goal is to be viewed as a source of strong and relevant knowledge regarding the distribution of health products and the struggles of our clients within the system. Rob Polick, a new nominee for the Board, brought us this idea and we are thankful to Rob.

EXPO RECAP

Thank you again to our title sponsor Aflac and our three major sponsors Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Priority Health and United Health Care and to all our sponsors and exhibitors.  We took some risks this year but for the most part, the response was very positive.  Both exhibitors and attendees felt the room was comfy and the location was not too ‘far out.’ We had an excellent committee this year who have some great ideas for next year.  Don’t hesitate to find one of them to give some advice or to volunteer for next year.  Our committee members were:

Amy Kelly, Dominic Siciliano, Jessica Scudder, Lenny Brucato, Denise Hodges, Melissa Snip, Neille Buckland, Michelle Mansfield, Krista Davis, Gina TenHoopen

As you can imagine, Expo is a lot of work but a firm tradition for WMAHU.  Thanks to all who participated in this event and to the volunteers, sponsors and exhibitors who made it successful.

GOLF OUTING WEDNESDAY AUGUST 25TH, THORNAPPLE POINTE GOLF COURSE

Ryan Pylman has an excellent committee again this year and the outing is coming together nicely.  We still have some foursomes and sponsorships available!  Contact Ryan at 616-450-3210 if you are interested in playing or in volunteering or sponsoring this event.

2010/2011 PRESIDENT’S SPECIAL PROJECT:  THE HISTORY OF WMAHU

In order to know where we’re going, it’s sometimes nice to know where we’ve been.
Another of my goals for next year will be to find the true history of WMAHU.  We made an attempt to honor all of our ten plus year members at our Happy Hour at Expo and we found it was very difficult to get accurate information in regards to our history.  If anyone has information about the year we were formed, the original board, the history of our board and membership or where to get that information, please let me know!

MEMBERSHIP

We are in need of new members and new blood now more than ever.  141 members, although nice, represents still a small percentage of the insurance professionals in West Michigan.  For this reason, our main focus for our board year 2011 will be membership.  WMAHU has been integral role at the table while the new regulations get written and all of us in the industry need to support those efforts.  For that reason, the Board will be looking at new ideas to not only make our local chapter more attractive and compelling for new agents to join but also at ways to reward our long standing members.  Should you have ideas for this or have strong feelings, please let me know as I am gathering thoughts moving into our kick-off Board meeting in July.
